Researching Companies

Why is research so important?

  • Taking the time to research a company shows you are serious about the job and makes you stand out from other candidates.
  • Having an overview of knowledge about the organisation will make you feel more confident at the interview.
  • Knowledge is power.

What you should research

The Company

Visit their website, have a good look through what is on there and make a few notes. You should also spend some time looking for information about the company across the internet and on social media. If feasible, we also recommend visiting one of their locations.

The Industry

You should have a good knowledge about the industry that you are entering into and how that relates to the company you are interviewing for. Know their suppliers, competitors and their marketplace.

The Interviewer

It’s not essential for you to know about your interviewer, but it is good to have a bit of an idea about who they are and what their role is within the company. Many companies have employee profiles on their website, or you could even search for them on the professional social network, LinkedIn.

Using your research

  • Refer to your research when asking questions, as this shows that you have taken the time and effort to prepare for your interview. Don’t ask questions that you could have easily found out by conducting research, e.g. ‘How many locations does the business have?’
  • Research is important not only in preparing for interview, but also to find out if a company is right for you. Do their values fit in with your own? Do they interest you? Do they offer the progression/prospects that you’re looking for?
