A New Career for Christmas?

Believe it or not, December has arrived again, Christmas preparations are well underway and 2023 is almost over!

The run-up to Christmas can be hectic; you’ve got to wrap up your workload as well as your presents. But when your Christmas break does arrive, it’s the perfect opportunity to assess your career. You may want to ask yourself the following questions:

1. What have I achieved over the last year?
2. Is my career plan on track?
3. What are my career goals for next year?
4. Can I achieve them with my current employer?

It’s time to think about what you want from your career. If your current job isn’t matching up to your ideals, you’re going to want to get out of that rut and find a new opportunity that does. When assessing your current position, there are a few key things that you should consider:

Employer values and culture

These are becoming increasingly important when it comes to excelling in your career. Are you working for a company that shares your values and offers a positive environment that suits you? If not, you are unlikely to fulfil your potential there.

The pandemic has been a challenge for businesses, but it has also been an opportunity for them to show how much they value their people. Some have risen to the challenge and supported their employees well throughout this period and that’s the kind of business you should want to work for.

Playing to your strengths

Working in a position that utilises and develops your strengths will allow you to reach for your professional peak and perform at your best. It’s important to be in a role that is a great match for both your skill set and personality. Playing to your strengths will also make you feel more positive and energised at work.

Happiness

This part is simple, are you happy at work? Happy people are generally more productive and more successful. It’s not success that makes us happy, it’s happiness that makes us successful!

Extensive research conducted by the University of California found that being happy leads to:

  • Higher-income
  • Greater productivity and quality of work
  • More satisfying and longer marriages
  • More friends, stronger social support and richer social interactions
  • More activity, energy and better physical health

You’re not going to be unwrapping a new career on Christmas morning as unfortunately, Father Christmas doesn’t cater for careers. It’s up to you to take positive and determined steps to move your career forward and in the direction that you want. By making the most of your holiday season, you’ll be able to reach new heights next year.

Will I be able to find a new job in the current climate?

If you’re unhappy in your current role, you may be thinking about whether it’s the right time to look for a new one. With job vacancy levels being incredibly high, you’re definitely in a strong position to find an excellent new role.

Finding a new job and the right opportunity for you is rarely easy, but if you are unhappy it’s worth having a look at what else is out there. They say the grass isn’t always greener on the other side, but if you don’t explore your options, how will you ever know?
