Unmissable Tips for Sending Emails to Recruiters

If you’re looking for new job opportunities, then connecting with recruiters is an excellent way to find them. Many job seekers, however, are unsure about how to reach out to a recruiter. If you’re wondering where to start with emailing a recruiter, we’ve got some advice on how to write an email and present yourself in a way that no recruiter could ignore.

Why you should connect with recruiters

Submitting a job application is easy. You simply send your CV and a covering letter and cross your fingers that someone will give you a call. However, when it comes to landing a top opportunity that lots of candidates are competing for, you’ve got a bigger challenge on your hands. This is where being in touch with recruiters can be extremely valuable.

A well-written email to a recruiter demonstrates that you are proactive and genuinely interested in the position on offer (as opposed to just firing out CVs in the hope that one will stick). Your email should show off your excellent communication skills and help you stand out from the other candidates.

Why else should you connect with recruiters? Well, did you know that an estimated 70-80 per cent of job vacancies aren’t even posted? If you are only relying on opportunities appearing on job sites then you could be missing out on a lot.

How to connect with recruiters

Recruiters always want to hear from talent because it’s their job to find perfect candidates for the positions they are recruiting for. That being said, they do receive a lot of emails and their time is valuable. To ensure your email gets noticed and sets the right impression you should:

  1. Be professional. You are communicating in a professional capacity so ensure you keep the tone of your email professional. Be friendly, but don’t fall into the trap of being too casual when you are introducing yourself.
  2. State your intent. You should state your intent early in the email so the recruiter can quickly see what you want. This could be for them to look over your CV or to arrange an initial phone conversation.
  3. Be concise. A long email is not going to look very appealing to a busy recruiter. You don’t need to include all your background information or a lengthy sales pitch, just say what you need to say.
  4. Proofread. Ensure you proofread your email carefully and double check for spelling and grammatical mistakes. Avoid using clichés and delete any sentenced that don’t add anything.

Don’t be afraid to connect with recruiters and drop them a message on LinkedIn. Most recruiters are on there and are always connecting with potential candidates. They’ll also have an opportunity to check out the skills and experience on your profile so make sure you are making the most of it.

Examples of emails to a recruiter

When composing your email to a recruiter, you should ensure you tailor it and ensure it doesn’t just look like another stock copy and paste message. The examples below should help to inspire you.

Example 1

Subject: Any field sales roles at COMPANY NAME?

Hi James,

I read your LinkedIn post last week about your COMPANY NAME’s impressive growth last year. It’s great to hear how well things are going. Do you have plans to expand your field sales team?

I’ve been consistently hitting and exceeding my targets as an Area Sales Manager at CURRENT COMPANY for the past 4 years. I’m now looking for a new challenge where I can progress, and COMPANY NAME has been on my radar for a while now. Would you have time for an initial 5-10 minute chat this week so I can introduce myself and learn more about any available roles?

Kind Regards,

Tom Wilson

Example 2

Subject: Branch Manager role in Cardiff – CV attached

Hi Sophie,

I applied for the branch manager role based in Cardiff last week. I was impressed by the level of freedom and autonomy that the position offered and I’m excited to find out more about the company.

I think I’m a good fit for this position because of my ten years’ experience in the industry has given me a lot of valuable contacts in the Cardiff area.

I’ve attached my CV for your consideration. Can we schedule a time to chat about the role a bit further?

Kind Regards,

Rob Gibson

Example 3

Hi Chris,

I had a chat with Rob Gibson yesterday and he mentioned that ENTER COMPANY was planning to hire more graduate management trainees soon.

I graduated from Nottingham University with a degree in Business in June, and I’d love to learn more about your graduate opportunities and what the requirements are. Do you have a few minutes for a phone call on Wednesday at around 1 p.m.?

Kind Regards

Craig Everett
