6 Great Questions to Ask in an Interview

You are preparing for a job interview: You’ve researched the company, thought about the kinds of questions you might be asked and envisioned the great answers that you’re going to give. But while concentrating on what questions will be asked of you, it is all too easy to forget to prepare some questions that you can ask your interviewer.

Preparing your own questions prior to an interview is beneficial for a couple of reasons. Firstly, your questions can further validate the skills you’ve talked about and the impression you’ve given in your interview. They can demonstrate a keen interest in the role and business while also highlighting your drive and ambition. Secondly, this is your opportunity to find out more about the company, because you need to establish that they are right for you.

The six questions below are a great place to start.

1. What do people enjoy most about working here?

This enables you to establish more of a personal connection with your interviewer, as you invite them to give their opinion. At the same time, their answer will give you an idea of how satisfied they and the staff are at the company. If they are struggling to come up with an answer, you should be a little concerned.

2. What training would I receive in this role when I join and in the future?

This question shows that you are eager to continue expanding your knowledge and skill-set. This is great for the employer, who will want you to grow and progress within the company.

3. Can you tell me a little bit more about the team I would be working with?

It is good for you to try and get an idea about who you could be working with day-to-day. Showing an interest in the team like this also demonstrates that you are a team player.

4. What are some of the biggest challenges in this role?

Find out more about what you’re getting yourself into. A job description can’t cover the entire spectrum of a role, so an interview is a perfect opportunity for you to get some more information.

5. Can you tell me more about the company culture?

Every company has its own culture. From traditional business values to more laid back “creative” environments, it can be very varied. It is important that you understand the company that you are interviewing for and can see yourself fitting in with their culture.

6. What is the next step in the process?

If your interviewer hasn’t already explained the next step in the process, asking about it shows that you are interested in moving forward with them. They may also tell you at this point how many other people are in the running for the position, so you know what you are up against.
